Game Changers The Identity Issue

Sekka Podcast: What it means to be a “fake Emirati”

A chat with Emirati author Roudha Al Marri.

This podcast is brought to you by Dr. Rocco’s Specialized Dental Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Roudha Al Marri is not your typical Emirati, or so people say. The 36-year-old is a vegan and a yoga instructor. She is also the co-author of the recently published UAE 101: Stories and Cultural Learning. The book, a collaboration between her and her Italian neighbor Illaria Caielli, is a guidebook to the culture of the UAE.

In this podcast, our Storyteller-In-Chief Manar Alhinai, and Roudha discuss the “fake Emirati” label that has recently been put on her, what identity means to her, and her upcoming solo book, which will explore 101 misconceptions about the UAE and Emiratis.  She also shares some of the strangest stereotypes and misconceptions she has heard during her research for this book.
